Traditionally, the vignerons of Cognac saved a certain percentage of their production of spirits for themselves. They used these exceptional cognacs as nest eggs, using these to pay for their daughters' dowries or land purchases in the future or simply for their own enjoyment.Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) continues this tradition with Très Vieille Réserve. Like the old artisans,they purchased small quantities of exceptional barrels from the Borderies area, when they became available. This area is renowned for producing some of the finest brandies from the Cognac appellation. Over several years, they werepurchased barrels from different producers. The oldest cognacs were from 1900 and the youngest, from 1920. It then took many years to marry these into this special blend.

Six years after the decision to replenish the stocks at Château Lafite, DBR decided to release a few bottles to be drunk outside the château for friends and passionate lovers of the produce of the vines.The bottles are produced from an authentic late nineteenth century mould, wrapped in paper and packed in individual woven cane.
